grave mistakes

06 December 2020

Laying in silence
It's easy to run those thoughts through my head
Over and over again.

Thinking of all the possibilities and regrets
Of what I have done or said,
Or what I could have said.
When time continues to slip by,
Those thoughts to reach out again.
But, instead I make excuses.
Feeling embarrassed
For not reaching our sooner,
Feeling like I may be bothersome.

So time continues
To keep moving
And so does the chance that I will ever take that first step.

But I'm reminded,
That though missed opportunities and mistakes have led to replaying the what ifs of today,
That these aren't unmendable.
Although it might not be patched up the way it was before,

It is still redeemable.
It is still valuable.

That if I were to sit and reflect on the mistakes that have brought me to where I stand now,
I would remember
That those mistakes were redeemed for something better.
So keep moving,
Even when the past won't let you forget.

I must move forward
And not lay here to rest.

Though i've made grave mistakes, the grave didn't hold my Lord down

Life Lessons from a Dying Houseplant

05 July 2019

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I decided to adopt a couple of plants from a local supermarket. Somehow I got caught up in the houseplant trend and was inspired to add a little greenery to my small space. I wanted to give it a try, even with my past history of having a brown thumb! Little did I know how exciting, but also frustrating at times green leaves can be... Here are a few lessons I've learned about life and myself – all from a struggling houseplant.

1. a gradual process is better than forced progress

When I first picked up my first round of plants last summer, I could blink and there would already be a new leaf growing on the side. Towards the end of the warm season however, things started progressing much slower. Watching them grow became less exciting and tested my patience. Because I was overly focused on seeing a fuller, matured plant, I missed out on the small steps along the way. I missed out on understanding and learning how to take care of each plant individually, instead hurting them by trying to force a process that takes time.

I believe the same thing happens in life when we try to speed up the process during seasons when we need to take things slow. Learn to be patient and witness the beauty found in the smaller steps.

2.  see things how they are, not how I expect things to be

When I picked up my colorful friend, I had it stuck in my mind it was a variegated rubber plant (which was a huge and silly novice mix-up to make 😳). This mistake led me to care for it in all the wrong ways, all because I perceived it to be something it wasn't. Unfortunately, until the plant had a near death scare, I did not realize what it actually was to care for it properly. As a result, leaves starting curling in all the wrong directions and the soil swinging between being either too dry or soaked.

3. failing sucks

As the weeks continued, my plant's progress kept inconsistently wavering, losing its leaves one-by-one. It was time to let the dying thing die. This was not only hard for the fact that I failed at keeping yet another plant alive. But also it made me feel like all the effort I put into trying to revive it and keep it happy was wasted. But looking back now, I know a lot more about what not to do the next time which is still better experience than none.

In the end, there are some things to be learned from even the tiny details in life. I guess my next step will be making a quick stop at the nearest plant nursery. Wish me the best and a green thumbs up! 😳🌿

On To New Adventures

11 June 2019

The first half of this year has been a whirlwind of so many transitions and changes that I did not always know how to adjust to (- still figuring out some too haha). I just graduated college and am moving onto a similar, but different season in life as I head to grad school. It's exciting to almost be doing what I'm interested in doing for work in the future, but also a little nerve-wracking with the bit that is still left to come.

For now, I want to try and take it one day at a time.

Waking up each given morning, and overcoming the rut of the mundane. I want each day I live to not feel like it was wasted at the end of the day. I want to feel alive and excited about God and for that to show. I want the gifts and passions placed in me to overflow and contribute something beautiful to the world.

Hope to share more in the coming weeks.

10 Staycation Ideas for College Students

15 March 2019

Spring is right around the corner, which means spring break is either here or will be in a few weeks! Even if you're not traveling to somewhere bright and warm, planning a staycation can be just as fun. Plus, it's so much more college-budget friendly!

Home is for the homebodies!

If you want to stick true to the "stay" part of staycation,
here are a few ideas you might enjoy:

1. Try a New Recipe from Pinterest

Let's be honest... Out of the hundreds of recipe pins you have on your food pin board, there's probably less than ten you've tried. I know I'm guilty! 🙋‍♀️
If you need a place to start on some simple recipes for inspiration, check out my board snack shack. It's categorized by breakfast, lunch, dinner meal times and other labels, with desserts included!

2. DIY Home Theatre Marathon

Almost everyone's had a good Netflix or movie binge at some point in their life. Why not add a twist? Using only a magnifying glass, shoe box, and your phone, you can make your own at home movie projector! It's an easy DIY to follow if you search "diy phone projector" on YouTube.

3. Write a story

This may sound like a weird staycation idea, but for someone looking to get their creativity flowing, this one's for you! Writing from scratch may come easier to one person than other, let alone writer's block being in the mix. Challenge yourself using writing prompts from random story generators. You might get some pretty wacky plots to guide the story, but it all adds to the fun and challenge.

4. Spa Day

It's a classic, and never ceases to fail! Light a candle, turn on a relaxing music playlist, and mix yourself a pleasant aroma using essential oils.

5. Paint Night with Bob Ross

If there's one thing on this list you're debating on trying, setting up a paint night following Bob Ross' painting series is not one to miss!

Explore creation!

A staycation doesn't only mean staying at home.
Get up and explore places right in your own backyard:

6. Eat at a locale restaurant

It doesn't even need to be a fancy sit-down place. Try out that new donut shop or cafe around the corner. Support a small, family-owned pizza shop. Bring a friend along in the experience!

7. Explore nearby nature trails

Sometimes taking a break and disconnecting from all things digital is well needed. Hike a nearby trail with a friend. If you are up to a challenge, plan and pack for a day trip for longer hikes.

8. Picnic n' Potluck

Instead of eating out, host a picnic, potluck-style with some friends! Plan out who is bringing what and possibly have an impromptu photoshoot... 📸

9. Visit a local flea market

With warmer weather approaching, flea markets come along with the season. You never know what treasures you may find!

10. Food crawl

Treat yourself to a food crawl across your city. Donuts and ice cream, and cupcakes, oh my!

Am I Too Busy to Love Well?

19 February 2019

Even though I missed Valentine's Day by a few days, the topic of love is still relevant in everyday life. This led me reflect on how I live and take the time to love others well, especially when asking the question, "Am I too busy to love others well?"

In the past semester, I would have answered after some thought, "yes".

We love because he first loved us.

1 John 4:19

There were definitely things I could not control with my schedule as a student, but I did have opportunities to choose when to intentionally create spaces to love the people around me like Christ. It starts by setting boundaries and knowing personally when I over extend myself (whether physically, emotionally, mentally...). For you, this could mean setting aside weekly times in your schedule to check in with a friend, or taking a break for yourself to be refreshed before moving forward in your day. It's easy for me to book myself from morning till evening when there are constant due dates and exams for classes, but it's not an excuse to ignore the command to love (God and the people around you).

Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
Mark 12:29-30

A challenge for you this week is to think of one person to love well and possibly asking prayerfully,
"How can I love               well?"

New Year, New Blog – arise & create

04 February 2019

It's a new year, and also a new chapter for this space of three years... welcome to arise + create!

arise + create is a space that is mainly focused on three things: living, believing, and making. I realized one of my frustrations when figuring out how to blog and what to blog about was due to not having a clear focus. The space I created when I first started was great, but didn't easily allow for big changes without possibly starting from scratch. I loved writing as graceboat, but I also needed a name that suits me in my current season of life and allows for some wiggle room!

arise + create is for anyone who will listen - honestly! But, there is still intentionally in how this space may connect with you. If any of these words define or describe you, this is who arise + create was made for: dreamer, kindness, doodler, compassion, thinker, adventure, maker, artsy, child of God, gifter, cozy

the writer is a twenty-something year old gal currently in college who enjoys paint nights, non-caffeinated hot beverages (sorry not sorry coffee drinkers!), and jamming to 80's beats

5 Tips for Casual/New Bloggers

02 September 2018

Being a "blogger" for about five years has its ups, down, and lessons to be learned. I think I might have mentioned this on here before, but graceboat is not my first blog. Or my second. (I think it's my third!)

Over the span of five years, I've pretty much packed up my space and moved to a different URL at least two times. I felt like I needed to move on once my interest started to change and I needed a fresh start. Along the way, there were a couple of things I did learn and have decided to include in this list. Hope it's helpful, no matter how long you have been writing!

#1 Do Not Wait to Write Down Ideas

The amount of times I’ve been guilty of this one... 😬
I have noticed that many of the times I’m randomly about on errands or in the middle of trying to work on a projects for school is when I randomly get inspired on what to blog about next. However, the mistake I used to make was waiting to write a note of the idea when I wasn’t in the middle of another task. There are few ways this could end: 1. You completely forget the topic and idea or 2. The same initial spark is hard to capture once you finally have time to sit down and recollect your thoughts. So, don't do this...

My advice: Type a quick note to yourself on your cellphone if you’re not able to write the whole post out in one sitting. Include bullet points of the main ideas you can refer to later, so it’s easier to trace back your thought process from earlier.

#2 Sometimes It Feels Like a Part-Time Job

From an superficial-view of blogging (my view when I was first starting out), it seemed simple. You write a post and publish it on the Internet, so people will read it and probably comment on it. That is unfortunately far from the truth of what it was then and especially now in today's blogosphere. It's more like: consistently post for steady viewership, visit another blogger's site to widen your web presence, promote your blog's content through multiple social outlets, etc––All things do not sound as fun and can make writing a blog more stressful than it needs to be. Personally, I don't follow the "rules of blogging" or special recipe to really get your blog going.

Mainly because, One: I'm not a full-time blogger: During the school year, classes are my main focus so the frequent updates on my blog dies down over those month, in contrast to the summer time.
And Two: The inspiration to write or place my thoughts into words sometimes doesn't flow as often as I would like to post.

My advice: Take your time and honestly--no pressure! It shouldn't have to feel like a part-time job. Quality is better than quantity, plus it shows to the people who read your posts.

#3 It’s OK to Take a Break

The last point leads right into this one; taking a break from blogging is OK! I constantly do that without even planning for it (lol). But really, inspiration sometimes takes time and there are points when life gets to busy to sit down and plan out content.

My advice: Don't feel like you need to announce every time you need to take a break, or when you come back. If it has been a long while (more than three months), it would be nice to refresh and update everyone on what you have been up to or new content you are planning.

#4 Get Ready, to Get Messy

Since blogging isn't a cookie cutter recipe, things can get messy, confusing, and frustrating at times. That's part of the beauty of blogging as well! You can make it into anything you want to be. It can be about your underwater basket weaving hobby, travel experiences, or advice corner (maybe even all three!) –– the possibilities are endless. And the fact that there's no other person on the web that will have the same exact array of experiences is a part that makes your space unique.

My advice: Explore different topics in writing and DO share things you are passionate about. That may change as months or years go by, so feel free to change things up. It WILL be messy!

#5 Share You

Originality is something I value when deciding whether to continue reading a blog post or clicking around a new blog I find. Having a distinct personal style as a blogger helps me connect to them as a person and some of the interests they share.

My advice: Try posting using your own photography, share your random thoughts (even if it might not make 100% sense), and share what you've been learning. There's always a way to add your own spin on a popular trend/topic, so make it yours!

Twenty Blessings

16 August 2017

Even though it's been almost two months since it was my 20th birthday (lol), I thought it would be nice to still carry on this tradition of two years. Turning 20 was bittersweet, but there are at least twenty things I can view a blessings for living on the earth for this long. Read up on my eighteenth birthday and nineteenth birthday blessings.

  1. Growing everyday,
  2. Learning different things
  3. Taking on new responsibilities.
It's a large part of growing up, that I'm only beginning to understand and starting to appreciate. Not that it will be easy or everything will run smoothly, but it will be worth it later or to someone else I may help one day.

  1. Never letting go of my childlike heart: I don't think I'll ever stop watching "kids" movies and loving on my stuffed friends/animals.
  2. Being able to travel to new destinations with friends
  3. Opportunities to share the gospel
It's really cool that these two things tie together during retreats during the school year.

  1. Two words: mug cakes. When you need a quick pick-me-up or you want to give yourself a mini-pat on the back for making in through a long work day.
  2. Building pillow and blanket forts any day, all day
  3. Photos

  1. Being connected to fellowship groups with people my age, at church and college
  2. Having someone wiser in my life discipling me
Which, I believe, is important to be helped and help one another in their walk (Prov. 17:17)

  1. A core group of gals to share laughs and struggles with
  2. Making it through college without loans

  1. Being able to blog for fun! :)
  2. Using art in different ways and to bless others
I'm excited to see how these develop over many more years

  1. Family, in good times and bad
  2. Different seasons and the beauty found in each (especially Fall)
  3. Starting afresh every new day
  4. Rainy afternoons to snuggle in a blanket and drink warm tea
  5. Jesus, as my Rock, Savior, and my God 💖

What are you thankful for this year as a ___ year old?

Twenty Blessings

Eighteen Blessings

27 June 2015

"The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace."
Numbers 6:24-26

I've been physically alive for eighteen years on this day. Eighteen. Just to think, two digits makes such a big impact in society. For some people, it was a gradual process to become eighteen and mature into adulthood. And others it's a wake up call to throw away childish beliefs and become a stern, (wo)man. I'd like to call these last eighteen years a process, because it was for me. But, no matter what I will always be a child a heart, and so many other people will be too. It's a wonderful sensation to celebrate birthdays and all, yet a dreadful thought. We keep building upwards, never knowing when we will reach the end of our blueprints.

While I could go on to talk about the dreadful part of growing up and ticking clocks, I'd rather focus on the brighter side of being eighteen: the blessings. It was nice taking the time to reflect on the things I know I should be thankful for, and what I often take for granted.

1. Having a house supplied with the things I need
2. Getting the spiritual wake-up call I needed
3. Attending a church that values fellowship
4. The people I've met (good and bad)
5. My gifts: creativity and artistry
6. My family
7. Being mealong with every "imperfection"
8. A vivid imagination
9. Being able to afford my first year of college without loans
10. Clam chowder. No questions asked...
11. The small, hidden beauties in nature
12. Different cultures, races, and individuals in the world
13. Growing up in a Christian household
14. The advancements in the world doing more benefit than harm
15. The ability to be able to communicate with people
16. My stuffed animals
17. Becoming more of a leader and independent
18. To have a Father who watches over me everyday, and every second
